Director of Nursing Services


Title: Director of Nursing Services (HPC/RN 6)

Job Purpose

To plan, organise, lead, control and coordinate nursing services in a Type B General, Regional Specialist or Type A Hospital. Conduct technical consultation and act in an advisory capacity to Type C and Specialist hospitals.

Qualifications

  • BSc. General Nursing and Midwifery from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Certificate in advanced Nursing Administration/General Management.

    PLUS

  • Seven (7) years experience in Nursing / hospital administration, exclusive of clinical experience.

     

Responsibilities

Management and Administrative

  • Participates in the development of the Corporative Plan for the institution, as a member of the senior management team.
  • Directs the preparation and implementation of the annual Operational Plan and Budget for nursing services. Monitors key performance indicators, identifies trends and takes action to maintain acceptable levels of performance.
  • Participates in the development/review of National Standards for Nursing. Supports the development and implementation of nursing services that reflect the principles of Clinical Governance.
  • Plans, organises and delegates nursing fiunctions and equitably allocates staff to maintain efficient and effective patient/client care.
  • Assesses current and fixture manpower needs, Prepares a master staffing plan which will accomplish organizational objectives and standards of nursing care, thus promoting optimum utilization of staff.
  • Participates fiully in the Quarterly and Annual Performance Reviews to assess the achievements of the institution.
  • Attends and participates in meetings of the Local Hospital Board, Parish Disaster Committee and the Regional Authority in planning Strategies relating of the administration of the institution.
  • Prepares and submits performance and other reports to the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Manages the resolution of clinical/nursing complaints in order to protect the credibility and reputation of the hospital.
  • Contrbutes to a healthy and safe working environment and ensures the adherence to the health and safety regulations of the hospital.

Clinical

  •  Monitors assessment of patient care through 24 hour nursing report, administrative rounds and nursing audits.
  • Participates in ward conferences and clinical teaching rounds Acts as an educational resource to medical and nursing staff within the hospital.
  • Plans with Medical staff and other members of the health team for total patient care.
  • Works in collaboration With the Clinical Effectiveness team in relation to the national initiative. Implement mechanisms to ensure that the quality of patient care is assured through effective supervision of clinical practice.

 Human Resource Development

  •  Undertakes appraisals of staff supervised on an annual basis, ensuring feedback on performance is given at regular intervals throughout the year. Recommends the need for staff development and training where identified.
  • Provides leadership and direction to nursing staff through effective objective setting, delegation and communication.
  • Teaches and facilitates training for basic and post basic nursing students in liaison with the Schools of Nursing. Provides support and teaching for other hospital courses. Functions as Chief Liaison Officer between the hospital and the Schools of Nursing.
  • Ensures that the welfare and development needs of nursing staff are clearly identified and addressed.
  • Establishes and maintains a system that fosters a culture of teamwork, employee empowerment and commitment to the institution’s goals

 Other

  •  Participates and promotes membership interest in activities of professional nurses associations, allied health organizations and community activities.
  • Initiates and participates in nursing research to improve care; nursing management techniques and nursing practice.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by the Chief Executive Officer.

  • Nursing audits are conducted on a regular basis.
  • Performance and other reports are accurate and submitted on a timely basis.
